On January 31, 2004, BJ Penn shocked the world when he submitted Matt Hughes in the first round of their Welterweight Title bout.
Soon after, Penn waslked away from the championship to pursue other fights overseas. Two years passed before he returned to the UFC to face Georges St. Pierre in a title eliminator. Penn ultimately lost a razor-close decision and the number one contender spot.
However, when St. Pierre was forced to withdraw from this fight due to injury, Penn jumped at the opportunity, even on short notice.
