When Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar advanced to the finals of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, no one could have ever imagined the performance they would put on. That fateful night, April 9, 2005 on Spike TV, history was made.
The UFC's first live event ever broadcast on free television was watched by millions of people. The light heavyweight final bout between Griffin and Bonnar ended up being one of the greatest wars in the history of the UFC. For three rounds, the two battled back and forth. At times, both seemed to be close to finishing the fight. Neither one gave in though and battled it out to the decision. As the judges' scorecrds were read, both men were all smiles. As the final decision for Griffin was announced, Bonnar collapsed to the floor. Moments later, he was raised as UFC President, Dana White, announced Bonnar would also be awarded the 6-figure UFC contract for such a stellar performance.
Both have fought several times since that fateful night. Now, their parths cross again in what could be the fight of the year - again! |
