MARGARITO STOPS COTTO IN A THRILLER
Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KO's) won the welterweight title for the third time in a classic struggle over title holder, Miguel Cotto (32-1, 26 KO's), stopping Cotto in his tracks in round 11.
Coto outboxed Margarito in round 1, but the aggressive "Tijuana Tornado" forced Cotto to trade blows by the second round. Margarito pressured Cotto, who boxed and moved well and who was ahead on all scorecards after 6 rounds.
Margarito was finally able to slow down Cotto in the 7th and his fierce aggression was finally paying off. Cotto fought well but was slowing down and starting to wilt.
Bloody and battered, Cotto was hurt in the 10th and finally surrendered in the 11th, after getting knocked down with a left uppercut. Getting up on unsteady legs, the exhausted and battered Cotto dropped to a knee without being hit and Cotto's corner told the referee that was it.
A boxing event which lived up to the pre-fight hype is certainly a candidate for fight of the year.
