MAYORGA WINS BRAWL BATTLE

Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (28-6-1, 22 KO's) wins a close but well deserved decision over the retiring Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KO's) at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

Mayorga surprised many with his display of boxing skills mixed in with this usual brawling tactics, sending Fernando to the canvas early in the first round and then again in the closing seconds of the 11th round, which sealed the victory. Although one judge ruled the fight a draw, which was generous to Vargas, he was over-ruled by the other two, who scored the fight 114-112 and 115-111.

It was a most entertaining fight and moments after the final bell, Fernando Vargas announed his retirement.

For Mayorga, he claims he will now go down to the talent-laden 147-pound division and attempt to get bouts with Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather.
