MAYWEATHER OVER GOLDEN BOY
BY SPLIT DECISION
Though perhaps not the fight "the world was waiting for", Floyd Mayweather, now 38-0, and Oscar De La Hoya, now 38-5, fought a surprisingly and entertaining bout before a packed pro-De La Hoya crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Wearing a sombrero into the ring, Mayweather proved what the experts said, too fast and a master of defense and outpunched the ever aggressive and slower De La Hoya. While the "Golden Boy" attempted to bull Floyd into the ropes, too many times he would flail away while Floyd covered up and then "Pretty Boy" would punctuate his escape with solid shots in retaliation.
Both men stood up well to the damage and neither fighter was ever in any trouble during he fight, which after all the nickles and dimes are counted, may well turn out to be the richest event ever in boxing.
While each had their moments, Floyd in the end had more and won on 2 judges scorecards by 116-112 and 115-113. One judge favored Oscar 115-113 to award the fight to the new 5 different weight title holder, Mayweather.
Congratulations to both fighters for a competitive and intriguing fight to place boxing back in the headlines.
