Gatti Tames The Great Dane
Another fanatical pro-Gatti crowd came out in full force and jammed the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall to the 12,000 seat rafters. They came to see if Arturo Gatti still had thunder in his fists, and Gatti didn't disappoint them, stopping the limited but tough-as-nails Dane, Thomas Damgaard in the 11th round.
Gatti, working behind a rapier left jab mixed with some booming left hooks to the body and straight right hands down the middle to Damgaard's head, swept four of the first five rounds impressively. It was in the fifth that Gatti hurt his right hand and Gatti switched to a southpaw stance on occasion, giving Damgaard a different look.
Damgaard was aggressive and kept on Gatti all night long. The Denmark native did have his occasional moments, but by the 9th round, his face was a bloody mess, being cut on the forehead, nose and mouth.
Well behind on the scorecards after 10, the tiring but brave Damgaard was hit with a great left-right combination by Gatti and staggered helplessly around the ring. Although Damgaard didn't go down, the referee mercifully halted the slaughter and Gatti won by TKO.
