GATTI FELLED BY BALDOMIR
Carlos Baldomir, the rough and tumble World Welter Champion, out-toughed the resident tough guy, Arturo "Thunder" Gatti and held on to his title with a resounding 9th round knockout.
Gatti was flattened after being trapped on the ropes and taking a flurry of punches, capped off wqith a booming left hook which Baldomir land flush on Gatti's chin. Gatti managed to get up at the count of 6 but was bulled into the ropes shortly afterward, and following a quick flurry by the Champion, Gatti crumpled once again to the canvas, this time for good.
The end never seemed in doubt, especially after Baldomir sweeping 5 of the last 6 rounds. Gatti seemed somewhat confused, being unable to hurt the charging Argentinian who was aggressive from the beginning. However, Baldomir, for some reason, seemed to take the 7th and 8th round off, letting Gatti back into the fight, but it was just a mirage. Baldomir stepped it back up in the 9th and the fight was over.
It would appear that after 15 years of exciting and very entertaining fighting, Gatti may very well call it a career. For Baldomir, a late bloomer, successive wins over Zab Judah and now Gatti, will propel himself into a big showdown with a Hatten or Mayweather for a huge payday. |
