Working behind an accurate and busy jab, Arturo Gatti opened with an early lead sweeping the first three rounds with his boxing abilities. Stepping matters up in the fourth, Gatti began backing Jesse James Leija up, landing some solid right hands and doubling up on his left hooks.

In the fifth, working behind his jab, Gatti landed a big right hand to the jaw of the retreating Leija and flattened his opponent. Amazingly Leija got up, and after taking a nine-count. Jesse James retreated into the ropes. Gatti unloaded a flurry of left hooks and right hands on the wobbly Leija and after landing a big left hook above Leija's ear, Leija crumbled to the canvas for the full ten-count.
