TYSON vs WILLIAMS
THE RESULT
Mike Tyson vs Danny Williams
Return For Revenge
Friday, July 30, 2004
Unheralded and disrespected, Danny Williams pulled off a stunning upset kayoing "Iron" Mike Tyson in the fourth round in an all-out slugfest.
Tyson stormed out in the first round winging thunderous left hooks and right hands that had Williams in deep trouble, but Williams held on and finished the round. The 17,000 fans in attendance were then treated to a 2nd and 3rd round which Tyson won, but Williams continued to take Mike's shots and fired back with his own lefts and right hands. After being penalized two points in the third round (for hitting on the break and a low blow), Williams came roaring back in the fourth. After a give and take first half of the round, Williams threw a flurry of about 30 punches, none of which were returned by Tyson. A Williams right hand finally deposited Tyson on the canvas, and he either couldn't or wouldn't get up in time and it was all over.
All in all, it was a terrific encounter which Tyson, as usual, dominated for the first three rounds, after which his conditioning gave out. In fairness to Tyson, he appeared to twist his left knee in the first round, which would certainly affect his leverage when throwing his hook, but it was Williams who should be congratulated for his huge effort and determination.
Whoever in the Tyson camp chose Danny Williams as an "opponent" for Mike's first fight back, did not do their homework. Mike's always had trouble with bigger, heavier guys who can take a punch and last through those first three or four critical rounds when he is most dangerous. It may have been a simple miscalculation over-estimating Tyson's punching power and under-estimating Williams' endurance.
Tyson did not attend the post-fight press conference as he was visiting the local hospital to check out his knee and no doubt this would also include a head check.
Is this the end of Tyson? Perhaps, but wouldn't a rematch be entertaining? |
