MORALES vs BARRERA III
THE RESULT
Erik Morales vs Marco Antonio Barrera
Once and for All
Saturday, November 27, 2004
Marco Antonio Barrera by decision! They got it absolutely right this time out, and after 12 see-saw rounds, which saw Barrera get off to a big lead after 6 rounds, Marco Antonio is the Champion.
His power punches had more sting to them than those of Erik Morales and although Morales made a big push in the last frame, it just wasn't enough.
It was a most exciting contest as boxing fans knew it would be. These guys are just made for each other, but a fourth bout between them isn't necessary, particularly if they want to prolong their careers.
Barrera wins the trilogy 2-1, and now faces the prospect of either dropping down a division to his more natural weight or staying at 130 lbs. The Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya, promoted Barrera and is a winner regardless of which path Barrera chooses.
For Morales, who showed poor sportsmanship after the decision was announced, no doubt due to frustration to his poor start, is still a force to be reckoned with and is far from a finished fighter. He just has to acknowledge he is the best 130 pounder in the world, after Marco Antonio Barrera. |
